    1. Digital transformation: Retooling business for a new age

Digital transformation: Retooling business for a new age

      What exactly is 'digital transformation'?

Digital transformation is about reshaping organisations' culture, business processes and IT operations around new technology in order to better engage with their customers and streamline their internal processes.

It's important to bear in mind what's at stake here: a recent survey of over 500 C-suite executives across Europe and the US (from ChristianSteven Software) found that two-thirds (65%) believe that 40 percent of Fortune 500 companies will not exist in 10 years' time. Over half (53%) of those surveyed said they were concerned about competition from disruptive businesses, although almost all (91%) were ...

IDG Contributor Network: Clouds may not reign supreme

The funny thing about pendulums is that they love to swing. There are plenty of examples, from politics to nutrition, but computing cycles also illustrate this cycle.

The mainframe computer was a centralized model, with access through dumb terminals. PCs enabled distributed client/server computing. Now we are swinging back to centralized computing, with dumb smartphones connecting back to robust cloud-services. Enterprises are shuttering their data centers and moving to cloud services.

Most of yesterday’s applications (CRM, ERP and UC) are moving toward the cloud. But the swing back to a distributed model is inevitable. The Internet of Things ...

"For the first time in the history of modern computing, we have seen a convergence of business and IT strategy, primarily fueled by the increasing power that new innovative and disruptive technologies have emerged," says Scott Holland, Global Advisory Practice Leader at The Hackett Group.

      A Strategist's Guide to Industry 4.0

Industrial revolutions are momentous events. By most reckonings, there have been only three. The first was triggered in the 1700s by the commercial steam engine and the mechanical loom. The harnessing of electricity and mass production sparked the second, around the start of the 20th century. The computer set the third in motion after World War II.

Is it too soon to proclaim that the fourth industrial revolution, spurred by interconnected digital technology, has begun?

Major innovations in digital technology are maturing and transforming the energy and manufacturing industries. Robotics, 3D printing, data analytics, the Internet of Things, and digital ...

Is the hybrid cloud's biggest challenge a lack of expertise?

Hybrid Cloud: 7 Ways It's The Best Of Both Worlds

Despite all the discussion surrounding cloud computing these days, many IT leaders still struggle to comprehend the concept of hybrid cloud architectures -- and the inherent advantages they have over public or private clouds.

The primary reason for the confusion is that a hybrid cloud is not a technology, but more of a philosophy of use, when compared to public and private clouds. I often wonder why a network management system (NMS) is not given more consideration when purchasing networking equipment. We all know the value of switches. However, how to configure them is a personal preference as whether one uses a CLI, a web-based interface or a network wide configuration tool. The problem is that it’s quite cumbersome going from switch to switch to configure them, whereas an NMS not only solves that problem but provides so much more.
